“If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
The Bible never suggests that believers have no enemies, struggles, or opposition. Christians face trials, disappointments, spiritual battles, and suffering. Rather, Paul is asking a rhetorical question in Romans 8:31. Compared to the power, love, and sovereignty of God, no opposing force can ultimately prevail against His people. The question is more than simply, “Who is against us?” It is more “Who can successfully stand against us when God Himself is for us?” and even “What can break us when God Himself is for us?”
If God is for us, we can move from fears to faith
When fear whispers, “What if…?”, faith answers, “It will be alright because God is for me.” When the opposition mounts and grows and press on us then we remember “God is for me” and recalls that ‘God plus one is a majority’. It does not matter how many are against us: it matters only that The One is with us.
If God is for us, we can move from chaos to clarity
Sometimes what brings us down is not the active opposition of someone or something outside of us, nor our circumstances. It is our own inner chaos that someone or something has triggered. Often our greatest struggles come from guilt, doubt, fear, and self-condemnation. Many believers struggle with feelings of unworthiness and failure. They wonder whether God is disappointed with them or has given up on them. They feel they are just an irredeemable mess.
If God is for us, we can move from troubles to trust
Some of us may be facing illness, grief, financial pressures, family concerns, loneliness, or anxiety. This verse does not promise an easy road. It promises a faithful Companion. The God ‘who is for us’ walks with us through the valley. When the future seems uncertain, rest in this unchanging truth: “If God is for us, who can be against us?
