We will launch our postgraduate Master of Theology: Christian Mission and Ministry programme in September 2026. If you would like further information or to register your interest in studying then please email Alistair.Cuthbert@uws.ac.uk or submit the form below with details of the information you require.
Introduction to the Programme
The MTh in Christian Mission and Ministry is our postgraduate programme orientated towards those who wish to develop their practice in mission and ministry and for those who are transitioning from one field of work/study into ministry. The programme covers 4 main taught areas of study and a research project that can focus on your own area of interest.
This programme is designed to fit around the busy lives of ministers and those working in other sectors. The programme will focus upon 4 main areas of theology and pastoral ministry—biblical hermeneutics for preaching, theology for mission, doctrine for ministry, and theological ethics for mission.
We envisage students to be passionate about learning about God, deepening their own faith, and feel called to help others experience God’s presence in their life. The MTh programme helps students to develop their core mission and ministry vocation and explore their call in a deeper way through sustained academic engagement and reflective practice.
While we are rooted in the Baptist tradition, our MTh programme is for all students from all backgrounds who are passionate about Christian mission and ministry.
Our MTh programme is delivered part-time and primarily through two block weeks a year – one in late-January and the other in mid-June. This allows students to take 2 taught modules a year. These modules will be delivered on-campus in Paisley and attendance at these block weeks is a required component of the course.
Depending on the module there may be one or two teaching/study gatherings organised in advance of these block weeks and these will be delivered primarily hybrid/online and dates will be advised in advance of the module commencing.
We have a fully resourced online library called the Digital Theological Library so all reading material will be accessible at distance and the rest of your class materials such as PowerPoints, notes, and discussion boards will be accessible via our virtual learning environment (VLE).
Our academic year usually begins around mid-September and runs to early August. While the delivery of the MTh modules are in January and June, the academic year still provides the primary structure to the year.
Students will be invited to enrol by mid-September preceding their first taught class with the intention of reading and preparation taking place in term 1 between October and December ahead of the intensive study week. Assignments will be submitted in the weeks following the study week. Similarly in term 2 preparation and reading will be undertaken between March and June ahead of the second intensive study week. Assessments will again follow in the weeks after the second intensive study week.
In the final year, dissertations / projects will be completed over the course of the academic year from September to August.
The MTh is delivered part-time only over the course of 3 years. The first two years cover the taught content at the pace of two modules a year. The final year is the dissertation and research methods module.
You may be able to take the course over 5 years although this may impact SAAS funding.
Applicants will typically possess a degree or equivalent. Normally, any graduate applicant with a 2:1 honours degree or above in Theology or a related subject from a recognised and approved institution will be registered onto the MTh programme.
Other graduate applicants who has a lower class honours or ordinary Bachelors degree in Theology or a related subject may be considered on the satisfaction of the Programme Leader.
All other graduate applicants who have a degree in another subject and either a level 7 (Certificate HE) or above in Theology or prior evidence of engagement in Theology/ministry may be registered onto the MTh.
English Language requirements:
In line with the UWS regulations, all programmes of the University require a minimum IELTS comparable score of 6.0 or above (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component). This will be acceptable as evidence of proficiency in English.
In the situation where a student does not meet the standard academic requirements, there may be the option for non-standard entry. Entry on to the programme may be granted where the student can prove other equivalent qualifications or experience (such as practical qualifications or work experience) with the approval of the Programme Leader.
Our admission requirements are not meant to be a barrier to progress but rather a recognition that the level of work requires a certain ability in reading and writing and self-initiative to work at university level.
General IT skills: All are required to apply online and enrol with the University online which includes setting up and using a University email account. All courses require electronic assessment submission and course materials are accessed via our online learning portal (called Brightspace) and our online Digital Theological Library. Therefore, we must be satisfied that applicants have a basic proficiency in IT.
Acceptance to this programme is conditional on a satisfactory admissions interview with the Programme Leader (or appointed staff member), and references indicating personal suitability (unless waived by interview).
We anticipate the fees for the MTh to be £7500 over 3 year. If eligible for SAAS you may get a loan for up to £7000 towards fees. This information will be confirmed on validation.
