Launched in September 2023, our Youth and Community degree stream stands out in the Scottish Higher Education landscape providing training and education for a generation of youth and community workers. The degree stream combines the foundational learning of our theology and pastoral studies course with specialisms in Youth and Community ministry to create a robust and rounded learning experience for students. With placement-based modules incorporating theological reflection it is an ideal blend of learning, practice, and development. Whether already in youth and community ministry or with a passion and calling to this area, the degree course will expand your knowledge, develop your practice, and increase your skills.
This January, as part of the wider Youth and Community degree course, our Practices of Youth and Community Ministry module will be available as part of the degree stream or as a standalone module. The module will be delivered online / hybrid to allow for maximum participation. Module Coordinator, Paul Beautyman writes:
This module will equip people to engage in mission in their communities by providing key skills and tools for creating theologically robust practice. Listening to our communities and drawing on the early church in Acts, the writing of Robert Linthicum for community development and Dean Borgmann and Pete Ward for youth work will provide the values in Christian youth and community work to shape the practices of this module. These practices will allow Christian workers to engage with a full range of people and express their Christian faith in schools, community-based activities and church programmes through working with children, young people and adults. It will also explore specific issues such as trauma-shaped practice and sports’ chaplaincy. The module is delivered through weekly online sessions, involving presentations and discussions. Assessments will be based on equipping the student to improve their own practice by drawing the values and practices explored in the weekly sessions and required reading.
