“As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and for evermore.” (Psalm 125:2)
An image of security
The hills around Jerusalem formed a natural defence – an image of protection that the psalmist uses to describe God’s care. Just as Jerusalem was shielded by its geography, believers are shielded by God’s presence. Security is not the absence of danger but the presence of God surrounding us. In seasons of fear, uncertainty, or spiritual attack, we can rest in the assurance that God surrounds them on every side.
An image of stability
Mountains are also symbols of permanence. God’s protection is not fragile or temporary; it is as solid and immovable as the mountains themselves; as ‘solid as a rock.’ God’s presence stabilises us: in a world marked by rapid changes – political, cultural, personal – we anchor ourselves in the unchanging character of God.
An image of steadfastness
The verse ends with a promise: “both now and forevermore.” God’s surrounding presence is not seasonal; it is eternal. God’s care does not expire, weaken, or fade away. This psalm stresses the permanence of God’s care and its endurance.
