“I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.” (Psalm 13:5)

The theme of trusting in the Lord is frequent in the Psalms, particularly in those credited to David. I have enjoyed tracing and reading the references to God-focussed ‘trust’ and ‘trusting’ this week. One phrase really stood out: “I trust in your unfailing love.”

In his doubts, David declares, (Psalm 13:5) “I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.” In guilt, David found that confession brought forgiveness and that (Psalm 32:10) “the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.” In his fears during the assault of evil ones (Psalm 52:8) David does not wilt but is “like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.” And even crushed in defeat (Psalm 143:8) David pleads “Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” In whatever his circumstances David survives because of his trust in the Lord’s unfailing love. In his doubts and in guilt, in his fears and in defeat David holds on to God’s unfailing love. Or rather – perhaps it is that God’s unfailing love holds onto him? May we too know and trust in God’s unfailing love, no matter what. May His unfailing love hold each of us.
