“…let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25)
It depends somewhat on which commentary, translation or search engine you use, but there are between 50 and 100 ‘one another’ exhortations in our Bibles. The underlying Greek word for ‘one another’ is rich with implications of mutuality, reciprocity, fellowship, and unity. You may have your favourite ‘one another’ group. I think mine might be ‘Encourage one another’ (2 Corinthians 13:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:18, 5:11; Hebrews 3:13) and ‘love one another’ (a frequent call of the apostle John). Whichever ‘one another’ comes to mind for you, they are collectively a reminder of just how important community and fellowship are. Our individual experiences of Christ may be highly personalised and unique, but it strikes me that to be in Christ is also inescapably communal. We are each brought into a one-to-one relationship with Christ but, in Him, we find ourselves in relationship with one another. We are family and friends, and brothers and sisters. We are bound together. We are never alone, never isolated, never separate. We are always helped, always prayed for, always secure, always loved, always nurtured.
Let us encourage one another with this knowledge.
