“Come and see what the Lord has done… He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God…’” (Psalm 46:8-10)
To watch or to read the news these days feels like stepping into the chaos Psalm 46 describes: earth is giving way; nations are in uproar; kingdoms are falling; desolations, divisions, terrors and wars spread. And it is no longer ‘over there’ or elsewhere. It creeps into our own nation and onto our own doorstep. The psalmist invites us to change our focus: to “come and see” calm in the chaos. And to change our locus: to “be still” in the storm. From a state of calm and stillness we can begin to process everything unfolding around us. We can begin to quell the rising panic, to de-escalate the tensions, to see steps towards solutions, to find order and purpose, to take hold of hope. Come and see what the Lord has done. Come and see what the Lord can do. Come and see a better world.
