SUMMARY:David Gushee - What is Truth and Why it Matters Today More Than Ever.
DESCRIPTION:As we launch into our 125th year at the Scottish Baptist College (1894-2019/20) we are pleased to be hosting a special lecture with Professor David Gushee\, author of Kingdom Ethics\, which some former students may be familiar with as the text from our Sermon on the Mount class. \nIn this lecture\, Professor Gushee intends to address such questions as: Why is Donald Trump’s relationship with truth presenting such a crisis for American culture and politics? How does our struggle for truth in public life relate to that of other peoples and places\, such as in the old Soviet bloc and Nazi Germany? What are we learning about the nature of truth and its significance in public life? Might the concept of a covenant of truthful political speech be helpful as a way forward? \nDr. David P. Gushee is Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics and Director of the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University. He is the elected Past-President of both the American Academy of Religion and Society of Christian Ethics. He is author and/or editor of 24 books and approximately 150 book chapters\, journal articles\, and reviews. His most notable books include Righteous Gentiles of the Holocaust\, Kingdom Ethics\, The Sacredness of Human Life\, Changing Our Mind\, and Moral Leadership for a Divided Age. \nProfessor Gushee is a devoted teacher-mentor and\, over a busy 25-year career\, has written hundreds of opinion pieces\, given interviews to scores of media outlets\, and has led several significant social-ethical activist efforts. \nDr. Gushee\, his beloved wife Jeanie\, and their regal cat Noah live in NE Atlanta\, where they are surrounded by four generations of family members. He is a classic novel reader\, world traveler\, and tennis player\, and awaits a call from his beloved Atlanta Braves to resume the baseball career he abandoned in college. \nA free event\, hosted in conjunction with the University of the West of Scotland. Lecture begins at 6pm with refreshments served from 5:30pm. To register for tickets please use the eventbrite link here. \nFor more information please email graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk or call 0141 848 3988. \nResources for churches / organisations \nYou can download a pdf to print a poster here \nFor a PowerPoint slide for notices / intimations please download here \nFor a jpg for a notice sheet please download here \n

SUMMARY:SBC Information Evening
DESCRIPTION:After the success of our annual Open Day we decided that we needed an Information evening for people thinking of studying theology but couldn’t make the Open Day.  \nWe recognise that not everyone who wants to study theology can come along on a Wednesday during the day to find out about SBC and so we’ve arranged to have an Information Evening – think of it as a condensed Open Day programme where you can find out all the essential information for studying at SBC. \nWe love being able to share what we do at SBC with prospective students and helping them to find out what might lie ahead. If you’ve ever thought about studying theology full-time\, part-time\, or even just taking one course then please do come along on Monday June 10th\, 7pm — 8:30pm. \nIt’s a no pressure event – so if you’re really not sure then do come along as it might help clarify your thoughts one way or the other. We know the investment of time\, money\, and energy that goes into studying at university so the Information Evening is not a hard sell or a final commitment\, but we also don’t want anyone who feels studying theology might be for them to miss out! \nEmail: graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk for more information or to register your interest.

SUMMARY:SBC Seminar - Final Year Dissertation Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Join us at SBC for a College Community Seminars. On Thursday 14th February between 1:30pm (for a 1:45pm start) and 3:00pm\, we’ll be holding an annual student-led seminar where our final year students will be presenting their dissertation research. This is an opportunity for the students to present their work\, gain some feedback\, and hone their ideas. The dissertation is a major piece of work for the Undergrads and this is a good way to mark the effort that goes into completing this assignment. \nThis year we have topics covering (broadly) the atonement in discussion with John Piper and NT Wright; children and the sacraments; and the role of the teacher in models of APEST ministry. \nWe’re pleased to offer this seminar for those with an interest in the topics and to those who wish to support and encourage the students! These seminars are open to alumni\, friends\, and supporters of the College\, as well as the wider public who feel they would benefit from engaging with the topic. We do hope you’ll join us. \nFor further information please contact Graham Meiklejohn on graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk

SUMMARY:The Dangers of Optimism: Nietzsche and the ‘High Noontide’ with Prof. Sandy Stoddart
DESCRIPTION:Join us at SBC for a College Community Seminars. On Wednesday 21st November between 1:30pm and 3:00pm\, we’ll be joined by UWS’s Professor Alexander (Sandy) Stoddart who will be sharing with us on the topic of “The Dangers of Optimism: Nietzsche and the ‘High Noontide’.” We are absolutely thrilled to have Sandy visit the College most importantly as a friend\, but also a colleague\, and a world-renowned artist. \n“Alexander Stoddart is a Scottish sculptor\, born in Edinburgh. Mr. Stoddart has been making sculpture and statuary in Paisley\, Scotland\, for over 20 years.  He attended Glasgow School of Art from 1976-1980 and afterwards entered post-graduated studies at Glasgow University from 1980-1983. \nMr. Stoddart has written extensively on the philosophy of aesthetics and published many articles. He had broadcast regularly on radio and television and increased his journalistic work.” (Adapted from: www.intbau.org/members/alexander-stoddart/) \nAlexander Stoddart is also Sculptor in Ordinary to Her Majesty The Queen in Scotland and to give you a flavour of what to expect (if anything can be “expected” with Sandy!)\, in an interview for the Scotsman he talks of “dipping into the New Testament every day” and thinks “the Broons should be forced down the throat of every Scottish child.” (Both very good practices in my opinion). Read the extended interview here:\nwww.scotsman.com/lifestyle/culture/art/sculptor-sandy-stoddart-on-his-art-1-3256577 \nWe’re pleased and excited to have Professor Stoddart with us again following his fascinating seminar last academic year (on Van Gogh and religion). These seminars are open to alumni\, friends\, and supporters of the College\, as well as the wider public who feel they would benefit from engaging with the topic. We do hope you’ll join us. \nFor further information please contact Graham Meiklejohn on graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk
