SUMMARY:Open Day - August 24th 2023
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the summer\, fuelled by a combination of summer rest and Christian festivals\, we often find people are eager to think further about diving deeper into God’s word and learning more about God’s call on their life. So on August 24th we’re holding a day to connect with College in both on-campus and online formats. The Open Day is for prospective students who want to find out more about the vision of the College helping people to Discover their Call; Nourish their Faith; and Reach their Potential. We’ll also cover the pragmatics of studying at the College such as modules and timetables\, modes of delivery\, and SAAS funding and finance. \nWe expect these to be smaller gatherings with the opportunity to talk on a more individual level about what you hope to get out of studying and the specific questions that you have. Our Prospective Student Advisor\, Graham Meiklejohn will lead the sessions and be able to give you advice about next steps and things to consider. You can contact directly on graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk if you have any questions or queries in advance of the Open Day. \nYou can join in the morning or evening with daytime sessions being on-campus and the evening session being delivered online (although we can still talk about on-campus opportunities!) \nTo register and pick your session please click here

SUMMARY:Whitley Lecture 2023 with Rev Linda Hopkins
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday March 9th 2023 we are pleased to host Rev Linda Hopkins to give her Whitley Lecture presentation on “Learning from Young People’s Experiences of Communion: Re-envisioning the Meal as a Space for Nurturing Faith“. This will have both an on-campus and online option for attendance with Rev Linda Hopkins presenting online. \nLinda Hopkins is a Baptist Minister with a portfolio ministry\, working in a freelance capacity as spiritual director\, mentor and coach to individuals and church groups.  In 2005 she trained in youth ministry at CYM\, Ridley Hall\, Cambridge\, and achieved a first-class honours degree in Youth and Community Work and Applied Theology (including JNC). She has worked as church and community (detached) youth worker and was a tutor with Oasis Youth Ministry\, London\, for four years before returning to the North West to work as Regional Tutor in the NWBA and NBA for Northern Baptist College.  She has an MA in Reflective Practice and Applied Theology and is completing her doctoral research in Contextual Theology at Luther King House\, Manchester. She recently served Waterloo United Free Church\, Merseyside (Baptist/URC)\, as their minister.  She lives in West Lancashire with her husband Peter\, and they have two adult children. \nIn her abstract for the lecture\, Linda asks whether we leave “adolescents to work out for themselves their sense of place within our practices of faith?” She goes on to suggest “we should appreciate the potentiality of young people as they are\, as those who bring fresh perspective\, and whom the adult church can learn from.” Informed by the voices of young people\, At the heart of her argument\, she considers that “Baptist communion\, as an important ritual\, is a place for the potential nurture of faith for all…argu[ing] that we may want to reconsider our practice of communion\, to enrich the experience as a place for being and becoming the body of Christ.” \nThe Whitley Lecture this year promises to be a thought-provoking\, relevant\, and helpful engagement with practices of faith and how we consider young people in these practices. If you are within the vicinity of Paisley we encourage you to join us on-campus for the lecture and discussion\, but we will also be offering online access for those who cannot make it to Paisley. \nThe event is free to all but we ask that you register through Eventbrite. We will be gathering on-campus from 1:30pm for a prompt 2pm start and starting the online stream from 1:45pm. \nYou can register here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/whitley-lecture-2023-learning-from-experience-tickets-506041713387 and we will be in contact thereafter to provide details about on-campus or online attendance. \n \n

SUMMARY:Autumn Taster Day
DESCRIPTION:Around this time of year many soon-to-be school leavers will be asked to consider what they are planning to do next academic year in line with the UCAS application deadlines in a couple of month’s time. For those young people considering youth-work\, charity work\, chaplaincy\, or ministry\, or are simply interested in studying in a faith-based environment\, we’d love them to consider applying to join our Theology with Pastoral Studies\, Bachelor of Divnity degree programme. \nAlthough you’re not able to apply to SBC directly through UCAS\, all SBC modules and courses are validated by the University of the West of Scotland and for campus-based students\, we are located within the University itself in Paisley. We like to think of it as a normal University experience but with the added value of learning in a Christian community. You can study with us for a full four years or decide to exit early with a one-year Certificate\, two year Diploma or three year Ordinary degree. So whether you are looking for a full-time undergraduate course or a gap study year\, which will give you a valuable qualification at the end of it\, SBC could be the place for you. \nThe day will give you an opportunity to experience a day in the life of the College – some time spent within a typical class environment; an opportunity to hear about College life and ask questions; and time spent alongside other students in our social and devotional spaces. The day will begin at 10am and lunch will be provided\, finishing around 1:30pm. We’re not looking to “sell” you the College but we hope we can help you think about your future vocation and discern if we’re a good fit to help you get to where God is calling you. \nAnd the day isn’t just for school leavers! If you’re considering studying for the first time or retraining then please come along and to see what the College can offer you \nIf you’d like to register for the Taster Day then please email Graham on graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk \n**We also offer all our classes through online or hybrid teaching\, usually with evening classes for those who are in part-time or full-time work\, so if you can’t make it to Paisley but are still interested in studying with us\, then please get in contact and we can arrange a conversation to explore study options for you.**

SUMMARY:Church in the Neighbourhood
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free seminar led by rector of the Baptist Seminary in Amsterdam\, Dr Hans Riphagen. It promises to be a stimulating workshop with some great practical advice for churches wanting to engage with their local communities. We’d love you to join us on-campus for a video link-up with Hans and the opportunity for discussion with students\, staff\, and visitors\, but you can also join us directly on Zoom to listen in on what Hans is sharing. \nIs ‘church-in-the-neighbourhood’ a promising direction for missional church renewal or is it just another trend that will fade away? This seminar stems from a research project\, which explores the possibilities of new forms of church in a suburban neighbourhood in Utrecht. \nDuring the workshop Hans Riphagen will: \n• introduce his research\, and also help us reflect about our own situatedness in the place where we live\n• present the findings of his research\, including how individual Christians as well as Christian communities relate to suburban neighbourhoods; and\, what does this mean for contextual community formation\n• provide opportunities for us to discuss the consequences of this research for our own missional practice  \nTo register your interest and receive information about joining us on-campus in Paisley or online via Zoom\, then please email Graham on graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Online Open Evening
DESCRIPTION:Do you aspire to make a difference? They might not say it like this but all of our students hope that they can make a difference in the lives of those around them and their wider communities. Some of graduates have gone on to become teachers helping to shape the next generation; some go on to become leaders in mission and ministry working with marginalised people to make their lives better; yet others become youth leaders and church ministers working within their local communities to bring help and hope to those who most need it. Though it might not seem like it from the outside\, studying at SBC is a life-changing experience and draws out the world-changer inside you. \nThrough our Bachelor of Divinity degree programme you get the opportunity to engage deeply with theology through issues of real life and you are equipped to make a difference whatever path you follow next. Being at the Scottish Baptist College stretches and shapes your thinking allowing you to critically engage with ideas and events of the contemporary world. The degree programme invites you to develop your strengths through learning in discussion and hone your skills through practice in placements. Undoubtedly you leave SBC changed for the better\, better equipped\, and better able to move on to your next chapter in life. \nWe believe that training for mission and ministry (in the broadest sense) should be accessible to all and at the heart of our learning is a welcoming and accepting community. Whether joining for one module or a full programme\, we hope that every student will flourish and move on towards their fullest potential. We offer online evening study and on-campus day-time options for distance students or to work around your other commitments. \nTo join our learning community in September 2022 register for our upcoming Open Evening to hear more about the programme and ask any questions you might have – email Graham Meiklejohn on graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk for more information or to register.

SUMMARY:Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Do you aspire to make a difference? \nTo join our learning community in September 2022 register for our upcoming Open Day to hear more about the programme and ask any questions you might have – email Graham Meiklejohn on graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk for more information or to register.

SUMMARY:Singleness and Marriage After Christendom
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce a book launch event in celebration of our Assistant Principal’s new book! Join us on Monday November 8th at 7:30pm for an evening celebrating Rev. Dr. Lina Toth’s valuable new book in the After Christendom series. We will hear from Lina and 4 responses to her excellent new book\, Singleness and Marriage After Christendom. \nFrom the publisher (Cascade Books):\nThis book follows the changes in the practice of marriage and singleness\, from those early days of the Christian movement to our modern preoccupation with romance and coupledom as essential ingredients of a happy\, fulfilled life. It argues that the current surge in the number of single people is actually an opportunity for us to reconsider both singleness and marriage in the larger context of a community of faith. \nLina Toth is Assistant Principal and Lecturer in Practical Theology at the Scottish Baptist College. A musician and artist as well as a theologian\, she is particularly interested in ethics\, spirituality\, and the theology of culture. Her second love is history—that is\, people and stories which have shaped the world we live in today. \nRespondents: \n\nDr Stuart Murray Williams (Series Editor)\n\nDr Stuart Murray Williams is the director of the Centre for Anabaptist Studies at Bristol Baptist College and the series editor of the ‘After Christendom’ series. \n\nDr. Irma Fast Dueck (Associate Professor of Practical Theology CMU)\n\nDr. Irma Fast Dueck is an Associate Professor of Practical Theology at Canadian Mennonite University. Her teaching and research interests include Pastoral Care & Counselling\, Gender Studies\, and Ministry Formation. \n\nDr. Andrew Clarke (BUS Continuing Ministry Development Lead)\n\nDr. Andrew Clarke has taught New Testament at the University of Aberdeen and the Scottish Baptist College. Currently he serves churches across the Baptist Union of Scotland assisting their leadership development. \n\nRev. Dr. Melody Maxwell (Director of Acadia Centre for Baptist and Anabaptist Studies)\n\nRev. Dr. Melody Maxwell serves as Associate Professor of Christian History at Acadia Divinity College. She has written multiple books and articles about Baptist women’s history. She is currently co-editing a volume on Baptists and gender. \nRegistration\nYou must register for the event via Eventbrite or emailing the College on scottishbaptistcollege@uws.ac.uk – once registered you will receive joining instructions for the event. \nYou can buy the book from the publisher’s website – For those registering for the launch a discount code will be available closer to the event!!

SUMMARY:Exploration Evening - August 10th
DESCRIPTION:Typically we’d hold Open Days at SBC for prospective students to come and find out about the College. But this year. we’re taking a slightly different approach. We want to invite you to an Exploration Evening – we’ll explore what the College has to offer\, but we also want to discover a bit more about you\, your hopes and your calling! We want to talk together and explore how we can best help to develop your call. We want you to discover what we have to offer and if SBC is a good fit for you; and we want to discover what works for you and how we can help. Rather than a large Open Day\, we’re intentionally keeping these small and often\, making them easily accessible and harnessing the potential for conversation.\n\nOn Tuesday 10th August at 7:00pm\, we’ll hold our Exploration Evening where we’ll give over some time to painting a picture of College life\, but much of the time will be given over to your questions and space will be made for one-to-one or small group conversations to help you figure out how study can work for you. We expect it will just be about an hour to an hour and half and we’ll wrap up around 8:30pm.\n\nIn order to make it accessible to as wide a group as possible we’re holding this online via Zoom – which we think works well for conversation and questions! SUMMARY:Whitley Lecture 2020 Goes Online
DESCRIPTION:In light of current circumstances\, the Whitley Lecture in 2020 has moved online and SBC are pleased to be able to “host” a leg of the lecture as it “tours” the UK. Joining up with our sister Colleges in the north of England\, SBC along with Northern Baptist College (Manchester) and St Hild College (Yorkshire) we will be hosting the lecture on Monday September 14th at 7pm. \nThis year Robert Parkinson will be sharing on “Finding A Friend: The Baptist Encounter With Judaism”. In the lecture Robert addresses some of the following questions: Are Baptist churches sometimes guilty of unwitting anti-Judaism? What is the state of play for Baptist-Jewish relations? This lecture will examine these and similar questions. Drawing on the positive side of Baptist history and practice\, it will offer guidelines for encouraging a greater regard for Judaism and a closer friendship with Jews. \nEver since the horrific events of the Holocaust\, the relationship of Christianity to Judaism has been under constant review. Many Christian denominations have made great strides toward a much closer rapprochement with Judaism. This lecture will ask where British Baptists stand in relation to this sea change in Christian-Jewish relations. It will identify potential problems in the theology\, exegesis and preaching of Baptists. It will offer examples of friendly engagement between Baptists and Jews\, examine possible impediments to the development of a closer relationship\, and propose constructive suggestions for deepening the encounter of Baptists with Judaism into the future.\n \nRobert is minister of Didsbury Baptist Church in Manchester\, an associate tutor with Northern Baptist College and has many years experience in Jewish-Christian relations. \nThe lecture will be streamed live on YouTube where you can interact with other viewers through a chat dialogue and ask questions of Robert. Find the lecture here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvKMrdG8iJA  \nDownload the flyer here

How does our struggle for truth in public life relate to that of other peoples and places\, such as in the old Soviet bloc and Nazi Germany? What are we learning about the nature of truth and its significance in public life? Might the concept of a covenant of truthful political speech be helpful as a way forward? \nDr. David P.
