SUMMARY:Singleness and Marriage After Christendom
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce a book launch event in celebration of our Assistant Principal’s new book! Join us on Monday November 8th at 7:30pm for an evening celebrating Rev. Dr. Lina Toth’s valuable new book in the After Christendom series. We will hear from Lina and 4 responses to her excellent new book\, Singleness and Marriage After Christendom. \nFrom the publisher (Cascade Books):\nThis book follows the changes in the practice of marriage and singleness\, from those early days of the Christian movement to our modern preoccupation with romance and coupledom as essential ingredients of a happy\, fulfilled life. It argues that the current surge in the number of single people is actually an opportunity for us to reconsider both singleness and marriage in the larger context of a community of faith. \nLina Toth is Assistant Principal and Lecturer in Practical Theology at the Scottish Baptist College. A musician and artist as well as a theologian\, she is particularly interested in ethics\, spirituality\, and the theology of culture. Her second love is history—that is\, people and stories which have shaped the world we live in today. \nRespondents: \n\nDr Stuart Murray Williams (Series Editor)\n\nDr Stuart Murray Williams is the director of the Centre for Anabaptist Studies at Bristol Baptist College and the series editor of the ‘After Christendom’ series. \n\nDr. Irma Fast Dueck (Associate Professor of Practical Theology CMU)\n\nDr. Irma Fast Dueck is an Associate Professor of Practical Theology at Canadian Mennonite University. Her teaching and research interests include Pastoral Care & Counselling\, Gender Studies\, and Ministry Formation. \n\nDr. Andrew Clarke (BUS Continuing Ministry Development Lead)\n\nDr. Andrew Clarke has taught New Testament at the University of Aberdeen and the Scottish Baptist College. Currently he serves churches across the Baptist Union of Scotland assisting their leadership development. \n\nRev. Dr. Melody Maxwell (Director of Acadia Centre for Baptist and Anabaptist Studies)\n\nRev. Dr. Melody Maxwell serves as Associate Professor of Christian History at Acadia Divinity College. She has written multiple books and articles about Baptist women’s history. She is currently co-editing a volume on Baptists and gender. \nRegistration\nYou must register for the event via Eventbrite or emailing the College on scottishbaptistcollege@uws.ac.uk – once registered you will receive joining instructions for the event. \nYou can buy the book from the publisher’s website – For those registering for the launch a discount code will be available closer to the event!!

SUMMARY:Exploration Evening - August 10th
DESCRIPTION:Typically we’d hold Open Days at SBC for prospective students to come and find out about the College. But this year. we’re taking a slightly different approach. We want to invite you to an Exploration Evening – we’ll explore what the College has to offer\, but we also want to discover a bit more about you\, your hopes and your calling! We want to talk together and explore how we can best help to develop your call. We want you to discover what we have to offer and if SBC is a good fit for you; and we want to discover what works for you and how we can help. Rather than a large Open Day\, we’re intentionally keeping these small and often\, making them easily accessible and harnessing the potential for conversation.\n\nOn Tuesday 10th August at 7:00pm\, we’ll hold our Exploration Evening where we’ll give over some time to painting a picture of College life\, but much of the time will be given over to your questions and space will be made for one-to-one or small group conversations to help you figure out how study can work for you. We expect it will just be about an hour to an hour and half and we’ll wrap up around 8:30pm.\n\nIn order to make it accessible to as wide a group as possible we’re holding this online via Zoom – which we think works well for conversation and questions! To register for more information please email graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk

How does our struggle for truth in public life relate to that of other peoples and places\, such as in the old Soviet bloc and Nazi Germany? What are we learning about the nature of truth and its significance in public life? Might the concept of a covenant of truthful political speech be helpful as a way forward? \nDr. David P. He is a classic novel reader\, world traveler\, and tennis player\, and awaits a call from his beloved Atlanta Braves to resume the baseball career he abandoned in college. \nA free event\, hosted in conjunction with the University of the West of Scotland. On Thursday 14th February between 1:30pm (for a 1:45pm start) and 3:00pm\, we’ll be holding an annual student-led seminar where our final year students will be presenting their dissertation research. This is an opportunity for the students to present their work\, gain some feedback\, and hone their ideas. The dissertation is a major piece of work for the Undergrads and this is a good way to mark the effort that goes into completing this assignment. \nThis year we have topics covering (broadly) the atonement in discussion with John Piper and NT Wright; children and the sacraments; and the role of the teacher in models of APEST ministry. \nWe’re pleased to offer this seminar for those with an interest in the topics and to those who wish to support and encourage the students! These seminars are open to alumni\, friends\, and supporters of the College\, as well as the wider public who feel they would benefit from engaging with the topic. We do hope you’ll join us. \nFor further information please contact Graham Meiklejohn on graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk

SUMMARY:The Dangers of Optimism: Nietzsche and the ‘High Noontide’ with Prof. Sandy Stoddart
DESCRIPTION:Join us at SBC for a College Community Seminars. On Wednesday 21st November between 1:30pm and 3:00pm\, we’ll be joined by UWS’s Professor Alexander (Sandy) Stoddart who will be sharing with us on the topic of “The Dangers of Optimism: Nietzsche and the ‘High Noontide’.” We are absolutely thrilled to have Sandy visit the College most importantly as a friend\, but also a colleague\, and a world-renowned artist. \n“Alexander Stoddart is a Scottish sculptor\, born in Edinburgh. Mr. Stoddart has been making sculpture and statuary in Paisley\, Scotland\, for over 20 years.  He attended Glasgow School of Art from 1976-1980 and afterwards entered post-graduated studies at Glasgow University from 1980-1983. \nMr. Stoddart has written extensively on the philosophy of aesthetics and published many articles. He had broadcast regularly on radio and television and increased his journalistic work.” (Adapted from: www.intbau.org/members/alexander-stoddart/) \nAlexander Stoddart is also Sculptor in Ordinary to Her Majesty The Queen in Scotland and to give you a flavour of what to expect (if anything can be “expected” with Sandy!)\, in an interview for the Scotsman he talks of “dipping into the New Testament every day” and thinks “the Broons should be forced down the throat of every Scottish child.” (Both very good practices in my opinion). Read the extended interview here:\nwww.scotsman.com/lifestyle/culture/art/sculptor-sandy-stoddart-on-his-art-1-3256577 \nWe’re pleased and excited to have Professor Stoddart with us again following his fascinating seminar last academic year (on Van Gogh and religion). These seminars are open to alumni\, friends\, and supporters of the College\, as well as the wider public who feel they would benefit from engaging with the topic. We do hope you’ll join us. \nFor further information please contact Graham Meiklejohn on graham.meiklejohn@uws.ac.uk
