“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8)
For many years now, I have sought to read systematically and sequentially a chapter of the Bible a day. I’ve lost count of how many times I have now read through the whole of Scripture in this roughly three-year cycle. It’s become an integral part of my daily routine. In each chapter I try to identify something God may be saying to me, and I turn it into a brief intercession for both me and a prayer partner. She also reads systematically. We email or text our brief prayer-lines to one another daily. That too is a part of our routine. The disciplined regularity of this has been a great encouragement and help to us both. It’s incredibly rare that either of us misses a day.
On one day this week I reached Matthew 7 and read again the familiar words of verses 7 and 8. My prayer for myself and my prayer-partner that day was that “our asking be insistent, our seeking persistent and our knocking consistent.” And so, I pray it for you today too.
